On Sunday 13th September 2015 we opened the doors to the station for the first time to the public since 1967. Not only did we have a wonderful Heritage Open Day, we also unveiled the new window murals.
We have been running an art project with the two primary schools in Trimley St Mary and Trimley St Martin. The project has included the children learning about the history and architecture of the station buildings. The children spent time at the station before sketching their ideas and interpretations of the history of the buildings.
We were very pleased that the Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr Doreen Savage was able to attend and help the children unveil their masterpieces. We have used a new technology, called Augmented Reality to bring the murals to life. Once the children had painted the murals, we spent some time with them videoing them to get a better understanding of why they painted what they did.
So now visitors to the station can download an app to their mobile phones and their phones will then recognise the murals and play the appropriate video. Below is a video showing this working.
The gallery below shows a number of children with their work during and after the unveiling.
Two Special Events, One Great Day
Sunday 13th September 2015 - 10am - 4pm
We have a special invitation for you, our dear Friends. Sunday 13th September is going to be a special day, we are unveiling the wonderful results from our school’s project and we will be opening the Booking Hall at the station for the first time since 1967.
As part of the national Heritage Open Days we will be opening the Booking Hall to allow visitor to see inside the station, to see and absorb some of the wondeful character the building still retains. Visitors on the day will be able to step inside the station and talk through the Trust’s plans with the trustees.
To run alongside this special event we will also be unveiling new window murals that have been painted as part of an art project that we have been running with the two primary schools. This project was sponsored by the Community Grant Scheme at University Campus Suffolk.
The two schools have been researching the station buildings. They have viewed photographs from all eras of the station’s life from 19th Century through the 20th Century to present day. They have had the opportunity to draw sketches of areas of the building that have interested them. Visits to the station followed, allowing the children to visualise their sketches in the actual environment.
We have also interviewed the children to get more of an understanding of their thoughts and ideas. We are hoping to use an exciting new technology to allow visitors to the station to be able to view these interviews.
The new murals will be unveiled at 11am.
